IC-8® Apthera™ IOL
The IC-8® Apthera™ IOL introduces a unique category in presbyopia-correcting lenses: the first and only FDA-approved small aperture lens for cataract patients. The Apthera lens offers a contrast-first design, helping you treat presbyopia without adding adding optical complexity.
The IC-8® Apthera™ IOL is the first Extended Depth of Field, or Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lens for monovision. This revolutionary IOL has a smaller aperture to filter out peripheral defocused light. This means that only focused light reaches the retina. The IC-8® allows patients with presbyopia to enjoy the full spectrum of clear sight, with excellent distance vision, near vision, and intermediate vision.

Apthera's Small Aperture Lens Technology
Like a camera’s lens, small aperture optics on the IC-8® Apthera™ IOL focuses light by using the ‘pinhole effect’. Passing light through a small pinhole, like the pupil of your eye, blocks unfocused light rays.
Try this experiment: Make a fist with your hand and form a tiny hole in the middle. Look through the hole like a pinhole. Text and objects should be more clear to your eye.
The Apthera™ lens brings innovative technology that filters out unfocused light with its patented FilterRing™ design.
The IC-8® Apthera™ IOL is typically implanted in the non-dominant eye alongside implantation of a monofocal or monofocal toric IOL in the other eye. The lens treats presbyopia by providing an extended depth of focus (also known as an EDOF lens).
As a result, intermediate and near vision can be improved while maintaining comparable vision at a distance.
Candidacy
The IC-8® Apthera™ intraocular lens (IOL) is best suited for patients who meet these conditions:
- 22 years old or older and have been diagnosed with bilateral operable cataract
- Have up to 1.5 D (diopters) of astigmatism in the implanted eye
- With no history of retinal disease and not predisposed to experiencing retinal disease in the future
In contrast, you may not be a good candidate if you meet any of these conditions:
- Dilated pupil size less than 7.0 mm
- Have a history of retinal disease, including but not limited to, high myopia, diabetes, macular disease, sickle cell disease, retinal tear, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, ocular tumor, uveitis, and patients who are predisposed to experiencing retinal disease in the future.
