Commonly Asked Questions from Real Patients

Q: Is There An Age Limit for LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

Recently, I met with a 61-year-old Walnut Creek resident who was seeking relief from near vision problems associated with age. Her distance vision was fine. She had come across something on the internet about treatments for loss of near vision caused by aging. Her eyes were healthy and her vision was good except for her near vision. She did have some beginning cataracts but nothing considered abnormal for her age and cataracts wouldn’t affect her vision in the immediate future. Cataract surgery might be 10 or 15 years away for this Walnut Creek resident.

I suggested that she consider LASIK vision correction in one eye. Laser vision correction is known for treating near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism but is actually very effective at treating presbyopia, the near vision problems associated with old age. The Walnut Creek resident considered herself too old for LASIK surgery.

A. No. Age Does Not Affect Your LASIK Laser Eye Surgery Candidacy

Age is not a disqualifying factor for LASIK surgery candidacy and many cataract patients have laser vision correction to further improve their vision after having cataract surgery in their 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s. Keith Richards recently underwent LASIK at the age of 68. LASIK is a safe accurate procedure that adjusts the focus of the eye by changing the curvature of the cornea by using an excimer laser. 99% of patients report being satisfied with the results.
