Common Questions Patients Ask about LASIK

While many LASIK candidates are excited for their upcoming procedure, there are those that have fears and concerns. At LaserVue Eye Center, we take our patients’ physical and mental comfort in mind before performing any corrective eye surgery. Our experienced surgeons will help to educate you and your loved ones about both the benefits and the risks of the LASIK procedure. We’re happy to walk you through the process to make you as comfortable as possible.

Do you have questions about LASIK? Make sure to ask an experienced eye surgeon any and all questions you have during a LASIK consultation. In the meantime, we have compiled some of the most common concerns patients have about LASIK, below:

Is LASIK eye surgery painful?

LASIK is a painless vision correction procedure with little to no downtime. During LASIK surgery, your eye is anesthetized with numbing eye drops. You will be awake and comfortable throughout the procedure.

What is the recovery process like with LASIK?

Immediately following the procedure, your eyes will begin to heal. A family member or friend should drive you home from your appointment, and you should relax for a day. As the anesthesia wears off, you will likely experience some discomfort. You may feel like rubbing your eyes, but don’t! This could seriously affect the recovery process.

You will return to your surgeon’s office for a follow up appointment, after which you should be able to drive, return to work, and resume other activities as you normally would. It is important to remember that your eyes are still healing, so strenuous exercise should be avoided.

What are the side effects of LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK is one of the most commonly performed elective surgeries in the United States, with millions of happy patients. But just like any procedure, there can be risks and side effects. Each LASIK patient is different, and no set of side effects is the same. A side effect patients might experience immediately following surgery includes four to six hours of mild irritation.

In the weeks or months following the procedure, dry eyes are common. Your eye surgeon will work with you to remedy this often-temporary side effect with lubricating eye drops.

Things like infections other LASIK complications are rare occurrences. If you follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions and attend your follow up visits, the healing process should be a quick and smooth one.

How long after LASIK will it be before my vision improves?

For many patients, it is not uncommon to see an improvement in their vision almost immediately following surgery. Some achieve 20/20 vision after just one day! The healing process can take weeks or months after surgery, so there is little reason to be concerned if your vision is not perfect immediately. It has been shown that vision can continue to improve for up to one year following LASIK eye surgery.

After your eyes are completely healed your vision should have significantly improved. LASIK is a popular vision correction procedure with a very high patient satisfaction rate.
