Does LASIK Eye Surgery Actually Hurt? And How Much?
You’ve been thinking about LASIK surgery for years, but something is holding you back: the fear. Guess what? You’re not alone. So does LASIK hurt?
Let us give you some peace of mind.
Does the actual LASIK eye surgery procedure hurt?
In all honesty, it can vary. Before the procedure begins, you will be given eye drops to numb your eyes. Patients generally feel some pressure on their eyes at the beginning. This is the part of the procedure when the cornea is being prepped for correction. However, it is not usually painful and only lasts less than a minute. If you’re nervous, you can always talk to your doctor about taking medication prior to the operation to help calm your nerves.
What about after surgery?
After the numbing eye drops wear off, you may feel some moderate pain and/or discomfort that could last for a few days. Some people experience no pain at all. This is a great thing to talk with your LASIK doctor about. He or she will be able to advise what pain medications you can take to manage this discomfort if you need to.

So LASIK may not hurt, but what happens if I blink or move my head?
This is not surprisingly a very common question. During the procedure, your eye(s) is held open with a small device so you cannot actually blink. And the eye drops you are given will reduce your urge to blink. Also during the procedure, the surgeon will gently hold your head in place. Your job is just to show up and watch a blinking target light.
Oh, and if you’re concerned about keeping your eye still, an “eye tracker” monitors the position of your eye and compensates for any small, involuntary eye movements. This ensures that each correction is delivered to the exact right spot while the laser is active.
