Common Questions Patients Ask About SMILE Eye Surgery

At LaserVue Eye Center, we take our patients’ physical and mental comfort in mind before performing any vision corrective surgery. We understand the anxiety many patients can feel before an operation, so our experienced surgeons are here to guide you through the entire SMILE Eye procedure. Our goal is to ensure our patients are as confident and comfortable as possible, so we will take the time to answer your questions or address any concerns.

Are you considering SMILE Laser Eye Surgery to correct your vision? Our experienced eye surgeons are here to answer all the questions you have during a SMILE Eye Surgery consultation. For your convenience we have also compiled the 4 most common concerns patients have here for you!

1. Does SMILE Eye Surgery Hurt?

All patients experience pain differently, but our patients commonly describe SMILE as virtually pain free. SMILE Laser Eye Surgery is the most advanced laser vision correction procedure available. During this keyhole procedure, your surgeon will create a 3mm incision in your cornea using a single advanced laser. The most “painful” part of this procedure is the anticipation of waiting for your surgery day!

2. How Long Does it Take to Recover From SMILE Eye Surgery?

Because the corneal incision is so small, patients are able to physically recover very quickly from this procedure. While all people heal at different speeds, our patients report feeling great the very next day and are able to resume activities like exercising after a week. SMILE is known for quick visual recovery as well; taking only one to two days for patients to see full results.

3. Is SMILE Eye Surgery Expensive?

Many candidates wonder what the costs are associated with this breakthrough procedure. While every operation can range in price, it generally costs $2,900-$3,600 per eye.

At LaserVue Eye Center we offer up to 2 Year financing options because we believe this life changing procedure should be affordable for everyone. We will also work with you to find the monthly payment plan that suits your budget best. An added benefit of SMILE is the money you will save ditching your contacts and glasses.

Talk to your employer to see if they offer a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). With this benefit you can save hundreds of dollars on your SMILE procedure.

4. What is The Difference Between LASIK and SMILE Eye Surgery?

One of the most common questions we receive is “What’s the difference between LASIK and SMILE?”, and because our eye surgeons love what they do, it’s our favorite to answer!

When comparing SMILE Laser Eye surgery to LASIK, imagine SMILE as a one-step, one laser procedure, while LASIK a two-step, and two laser procedure.

During SMILE the laser is used to make a very small incision in your cornea. Compared to the LASIK procedure where a laser is used to cut a flap in your corneal tissue, while another laser is used to reshape the cornea afterwards.

The key difference between the two procedures is the amount of corneal tissue that is cut. Unlike LASIK, SMILE vision correction surgery is a flapless procedure, meaning less tissue is being cut, and the chances of flap-related complications is eliminated.
